Thursday 12th February 2015

Asked by: Lucy Powell (Labour (Co-op) - Manchester Central)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how much her Department has spent on (a) taxis, (b) first class train tickets and (c) business class air travel in each of the last five years.

Answered by Karen Bradley

The Home Office is performing well in reducing spending while protecting and improving our services. Against an 09/10 baseline, Government has saved £1.4billion through centralising arrangements for common goods and services.

Since 2009/10 we hve reduced the use of taxis by over 30% and we have cut spending on first class rail travel by 92% since 2010/11. Between 2006-2010 and 2010-2014, we have cut spending on taxis by £1.4m, on first-class rail by £3m, and all air travel by £4m.

The spend for taxis, first class train tickets and business class air travel in the last five years are as follows.

Taxis*
2009-2010 £768,623.66
2010-2011 £531,192.09
2011-2012 £318,944.83
2012-2013 £534,167.57
2013-2014 £529,919.39

First Class Train Tickets**
2010-2011 £203,884.12
2011-2012 £26,051.22
2012-2013 £23,232.63
2013-2014 £22,934.14

Business Class Air Travel***
2010-2011 £678,187.04
2011-2012 £861,537.43
2012-2013 £667,298.69
2013-2014 £1,010,037.59

It is not possible to separately identify the cost of first class train tickets and business class air travel in 2009/2010.

Tuesday 3rd February 2015

Asked by: Lucy Powell (Labour (Co-op) - Manchester Central)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many recruitment and employment agencies her Department has used to source staff in each year since 2010-11.

Answered by Karen Bradley

The Home Department does not centrally hold details of recruitment and employment agencies who are engaged to source staff so this information could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.

Staff
Monday 5th January 2015

Asked by: Lucy Powell (Labour (Co-op) - Manchester Central)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how much her Department has spent on (a) consultants, (b) temporary staff and (c) contingent labour in each of the last five years; how many people have been so employed; what the length of contract of each such person was; and what equivalent civil service salary band each was on.

Answered by Karen Bradley

Expenditure incurred by the Home Department and its agencies on consultants,
temporary staff and contingent labour in the last five years is published
annually in the Home Office Annual Report and Accounts, copies of which are
held in the House Library and available from these links.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/home-office-annual-report-and-accounts-2013-to-2014

The Department did not separately account for Agency Staff (Temporary Workers)
in these years as the costs associated with this category are included in the
overall Contingent Labour figures.

Spend on contingent and consultancy labour has decreased significantly overall
since 09/10.

The Department engages Temporary Staff at AA, AO, EO, HEO and SEO equivalent
Grades, the vast majority at the AA to EO grades. Contractors are engaged in
grade equivalents EO to SCS PB1 with the vast majority at SEO and G6/7.

The Department buys consultancy as a service and therefore does not engage
consultants individually.

To provide details of contract durations and equivalent grades would require
analysis of individual contracts and disparate datasets, the time taken to
undertake this task would incur disproportionate cost.

Fraud
Thursday 18th December 2014

Asked by: Lucy Powell (Labour (Co-op) - Manchester Central)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what estimate she has made of the cost of (a) fraud and (b) financial error in (i) her Department, (ii) its executive agencies and (iii) its non-departmental public bodies in each of the last five years.

Answered by Karen Bradley

Previously reported fraud data was collected on behalf of HM Treasury. Archived reports can be found at:
http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20130129110402/http:/www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/psr_managing_risk_of_fraud.htm

Currently the Home Office collects data for inclusion in the Quarterly Data Survey, as part of a Cabinet Office initiative, and shows combined totals of reported fraud and error for the Home Office and its executive agencies.

The Home Office has collected data for financial error since 2012/13, and is also published as part of a broader Cabinet Office initiative within the Quarterly Data Summary. Prior to 2012-13, the Home Office did not report the
value of financial error data. The Home Office does not collect data on financial error for Non-Departmental Public Bodies.
