The proportion granted varies by nationality reflecting a number of factors, including the evidence submitted in individual applications, whether applicants are eligible, and UKVI’s assessment of whether an applicant is a genuine visitor. Detailed information on how UK Visas and Immigration makes decisions on visitor cases is published at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/visit-guidance The latest quarterly Home Office immigration statistics on entry clearance visas are published in ‘Immigration Statistics’, available from the Home Office website at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/migration-statistics

Written Question
Asylum
Wednesday 15th June 2016

Asked by: Kirsty Blackman (Scottish National Party - Aberdeen North)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many unaccompanied asylum seeking children were denied permanent asylum having applied as an adult in 2015.

Answered by James Brokenshire

When a child passes the age of 18 and their Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) leave expires, they are no longer considered to be a UASC and are therefore required to take steps to return voluntarily or seek further leave to remain. Our records show that the number of main asylum claimants under the age of 18 years of age, who were granted UASC leave based on an asylum claim made on or after 1 April 2005 , who went on to submit a further leave application in 2015 and were refused is 311.

Note 2: Not all applications refused in a given six month period were received in the same six month period.

Note 3: An application for multiple Tiers and/or categories may be partially granted; therefore refusals also includes those application where a licence may have been granted under one Tier, but refused under a different Tier.

Written Question
Asylum: Children
Monday 14th September 2015

Asked by: Kirsty Blackman (Scottish National Party - Aberdeen North)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many people granted temporary asylum as children have been denied permanent asylum upon applying as an adult by country of origin in each of the last 10 years.

Answered by James Brokenshire

The Home Office does not return Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) whose claims have been refused, unless adequate reception arrangements are in place in the country to which the child is to be returned. If adequate reception arrangements are absent, most unaccompanied children are granted temporary leave to remain (UASC Leave) which usually continues until their 18th birthday. When a child passes the age of 18 and their UASC Leave expires, they are no longer considered to be an unaccompanied asylum seeking child and are therefore required to take steps to return voluntarily or seek further leave to remain. If the individual does not seek to regularise their stay through further applications or leave is not granted they may be removed should they fail to leave voluntarily. The table below provides the number of people granted UASC Leave as children and who have been denied permanent asylum upon applying as an adult by country of origin in each of the last 10 years:

Written Question
Asylum: Children
Monday 14th September 2015

Asked by: Kirsty Blackman (Scottish National Party - Aberdeen North)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many people granted temporary asylum as children, having arrived in the UK under the age of 12, have been denied permanent asylum upon applying as an adult in each of the last 10 years.

Monday 7th September 2015

Asked by: Kirsty Blackman (Scottish National Party - Aberdeen North)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many people granted temporary asylum as children have been denied permanent asylum upon applying as an adult in each of the last 10 years.

Answered by James Brokenshire

When a child passes the age of 18 and their Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) leave expires, they are no longer considered to be a UASC and are therefore required to take steps to return voluntarily or seek further leave to remain. If the individual does not seek to regularise their stay through further applications or leave is not granted they may be removed in accordance with the Immigration Rules and published Home Office policy should they fail to leave voluntarily.

The table below provides the number of individuals refused further leave in each of the last 10 years where they had been previously granted UASC leave.
