WAQ79765
Asked by: Paul Davies (Welsh Conservative Party - Preseli Pembrokeshire) Thursday 9th April 2020 Question What is the Welsh Government is doing to protect dairy farmers from reductions in the price of milk, during the coronavirus outbreak? Answered by Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs The dairy sector is a vital part of the farming industry and I am aware of the impact the realignment of the supply chain is having on primary producers and processors. Officials are in regular contact with industry stakeholders to discuss the issues facing each sector, including through the Agriculture Resilience Group (ARG) and the Dairy Focus Group. My officials are working collaboratively with the UK Government and other Devolved Administrations to analyse whether intervention or easement measures are required. The UK Agricultural Market Monitoring (UKAMMG) is monitoring all agricultural markets, and is currently meeting with my officials on a weekly basis to assess the impact of COVID-19 on the price of agricultural produce. I have written to the Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, George Eustice, emphasising the need to collaborate as governments to use the powers available to us to protect the UK agri-food supply chain during this difficult time, and to mitigate against the severe disruption this crisis is causing to our producers and processors. |

No Department None 2. Culture and the new relationship with the European Union: Evidence session with the Welsh Government (8)
I think that certainly has an impact. As I mentioned, I think officials work at a much better level, probably, than sometimes the Ministers do. But, ultimately, if you get to know somebody in your work—. So, I'll use George Eustice as an example. I built up a very good relationship with him. Don't get me wrong, there were lots of differences of opinion, but you at least felt that you went, your voice was heard, he took your views into consideration. I was due to have an IMG last week on the social justice part of the portfolio; it was postponed two hours beforehand—you know, with the Home Secretary. It's not great. You prepare for it and then suddenly you're not able to give those views. I'm not saying officials don't take them forward, but, really, you need that ministerial connection to make sure that they understand what Welsh Government priorities are.
|
