Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator
Monday 9th July 2018

Asked by: Anneliese Dodds (Labour (Co-op) - Oxford East)

Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what (a) findings, (b) safety improvement notices and (c) immediate safety requirements were issued by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator in each year since 2010; and how many have not been formally closed out.

Answered by Guto Bebb

Since 2010 the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator (DNSR) has issued five safety improvement notices and has not issued any immediate safety requirement notices. Prior to April 2015 the DNSR Annual Assurance Reports, available on GOV.uk, detail the assurance activity conducted by the Regulator. Since this date the reports and contents have been redacted in full, to ensure our capabilities are not compromised. Detailed information on findings for the period specified is not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. Such detailed information would be subject to security classification that would limit disclosure.

Radioactive Materials: Transport
Wednesday 27th June 2018

Asked by: Anneliese Dodds (Labour (Co-op) - Oxford East)

Question to the Ministry of Defence:

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, what steps are being taken to learn the lessons from the emergency planning exercise undertaken at Prestwick on the transport of nuclear materials.

Answered by Guto Bebb

The Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator (DNSR) concluded that the Nuclear Emergency Response Exercise in question, Exercise Senator 2011, achieved its stated objectives.

We maintain a robust change and improvement process to ensure that all lessons for the transportation of nuclear materials, however they are identified, are actioned.

The DNSR assessment report for Exercise Senator 2011 contained five findings, four of which have been formally closed out. The final one has been addressed and we expect it to be fully closed out by the end of the year.
