Mauritius: Piracy
Asked by: Daniel Kawczynski (Conservative - Shrewsbury and Atcham)
Friday 9th December 2022

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what funding has been provided to Mauritius to prosecute suspected Somali pirates captured by the Royal Navy in the Indian Ocean, since the singing of a Memorandum of Understanding on this issue in 2012.

Answered by Andrew Mitchell - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) (Minister for Development)

In 2013 the then Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Alistair Burt, announced a £2.25 million package supporting anti-piracy efforts in the Indian Ocean region. As part of this, £650,000 was allocated to Mauritius for the funding of a new courtroom facility equipped to handle piracy prosecutions. The announcement can be found on GOV.UK (https://www.gov.uk/government/speeches/uk-to-allocate-further-funding-for-work-against-piracy).

Interpol: Public Appointments
Asked by: Ben Bradshaw (Labour - Exeter)
Monday 22nd November 2021

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, what representations she has received on the upcoming election to the presidency of Interpol from (a) former ministers and former officials in her Department and (b) the former Minister for the Middle East, Rt Hon. Alistair Burt.

Answered by Kit Malthouse

Officials are continuing to assess the suitability of all candidates for the INTERPOL Executive Committee elections on 25 November, and a decision on voting intentions, including the presidency, will be taken in due course.

As is commonplace in multilateral elections, representations have been made to the Department by both countries presenting candidates for the presidency.
