Attorney General: Redundancy Pay
Asked by: Wera Hobhouse (Liberal Democrat - Bath) Monday 9th September 2024 Question to the Attorney General: To ask the Solicitor General, what the cost to her Department was of ministerial severance payments in each year from 19 December 2019 to 30 May 2024; which Ministers received a severance payment in that period; and how much each Minister received. Answered by Sarah Sackman - Minister of State (Ministry of Justice) Details of ministerial severance payments are published in the HM Procurator General and Treasury Solicitor Annual Report and Accounts. These can be found here: Transparency andfreedom of information releases - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). I confirm that over the period 19 December 2019 to 30 May 2024, the following payments were made: The Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Cox KC MP – £23,612 (February 2020) The Rt Hon Alex Chalk KC – £14,490 (August 2022) Edward Timpson CBE KC – £14,490 (October 2022) The Rt Hon Sir Michael Ellis KC – £23,612 (November 2022) Information on any payments from 31 May 2024 will be released in due course. All severance payments were made under the Ministerial and other Pensions and Salaries Act 1991, which provides for severance payments to ministers who cease to hold office and are not re-appointed to government within three weeks. This reflects the lack of any notice period when ministers leave government. |

WQ89455
Asked by: Adam Price (Plaid Cymru - Carmarthen East and Dinefwr) Tuesday 31st October 2023 Question What assessment has the Minister made of the implications of the UK Government's decision to allow the early release of prisoners from Welsh prisons? Answered by Minister for Social Justice and Chief Whip On 16 October the Lord Chancellor & Secretary of State for Justice Alex Chalk gave a statement in the Commons on measures the UK Government is taking to address prison capacity issues. Officials from HM Prison and Probation Service in Wales have provided a briefing on the End of Custody Supervised License scheme to the Welsh Government. This briefing confirmed only a limited number of men will be affected by the scheme, and there will be a risk assessment process and support package for the men involved to ensure they are supported and risks to the community are managed. It is imperative that his happens and is carefully managed to ensure each man released has the support they need to rehabilitate from offending and go on to live fulfilling lives as part of their home communities. The pressures on the current prison estate reflect the impact of decades of punitive, regressive approach to crime and justice issues. It is increasingly clear that a different approach is needed. Welsh Government does not support an increase in prison places. What is needed is a more preventative approach to justice, which addresses the cause of offending and diverts people away from custody. Devolving justice to Wales, which we are actively pursuing, would allow us to deliver this alternative vision for justice in full. This would build on our work under the current constitutional settlement, such as the Women’s Justice and Youth Justice Blueprint. |
WQ88825
Asked by: Rhys ab Owen (Independent Member - South Wales Central) Friday 25th August 2023 Question What discussions has the Minister had with the Ministry of Justice regarding the refunding of prison stay fees of wrongfully imprisoned individuals? Answered by Minister for Social Justice and Chief Whip The UK Government is responsible for justice, including the compensation scheme for miscarriages of justice. Lord Chancellor Alex Chalk announced on 6 August that from immediate effect the miscarriage of justice compensation scheme guidance on ‘saved living costs’ would be discontinued. The guidance allowed the scheme’s independent assessor to deduct costs such as rent or mortgage payments not incurred during the recipients time in prison from compensation payments. The change came in the wake of widespread media coverage of the Andrew Malvin who spent 17 years in prison after being wrongly committed of rape. Whilst I have had no formal discussion with the Ministry of Justice about the scheme, I welcome the amendment. |
