Written Question
European Commission
Monday 14th July 2014

Asked by: Lord Pearson of Rannoch (Non-affiliated - Life peer)

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether the President of the European Commission has the power to veto or approve any proposed new United Kingdom member of the Commission.

Answered by Baroness Warsi

Member States each nominate a candidate for a Commissioner. It is for the European Commission President-elect to decide on the proposed internal organisation of the Commission. The Council, by common accord with the President-elect, adopts the list of proposed Commissioners.
