Nagorno Karabakh: Armed Conflict
Asked by: Andrew Rosindell (Conservative - Romford) Monday 23rd October 2023 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what steps he is taking to help de-escalate recent violence in Artsakh or Nagorno-Karabakh. Answered by Leo Docherty The UK Government was clear in publicly calling for an end to the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, and has called on all parties to avoid any future escalatory actions. Ministers have raised the importance of de-escalation directly with Azerbaijani counterparts. Lord Ahmed met Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Bayramov on the 23 September in New York, I [Minister Docherty] called Bayramov on 28 September and the Foreign Secretary spoke with Bayramov on 17 October. Ministers have also engaged with Armenia on issues relating to the conflict. I [Minister Docherty] spoke to Armenian Foreign Minister Mirzoyan on the 28 September, and the Foreign Secretary called Mirzoyan on 10 October. |
Colombia: José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers Collective
Asked by: Fabian Hamilton (Labour - Leeds North East) Wednesday 8th June 2022 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what discussions she has had with her Colombian counterpart on the recent (a) attacks against and (b) surveillance of members of the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers Collective. Answered by Vicky Ford UK ministers and senior officials regularly raise human rights issues, as well as specific cases of concern, with the Colombian Government and in multilateral fora. Most recently, Lord Ahmed discussed human rights and the security situation in Colombia in his meeting with President Duque on 12 April. I also discussed human rights concerns with Vice-President and Foreign Minister Ramírez on 10 February. Colombia is a UK 'Human Rights Priority Country,' and we also consistently raise our concerns regarding violence against human rights defenders, including social leaders and indigenous leaders at the UN Security Council, as we did on 12 April. We look to the Colombian Government to further integrate its presence in conflict-affected areas, and strengthen the institutions that can investigate and prosecute the criminal actors responsible. Last April, officials from our Embassy in Bogotá met with Wayúu Indigenous leaders to discuss concerns and FCDO officials in London met with a member of the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers Collective on 25 May. Through our Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) programme, which has provided £69 million in support of peace agreement implementation, security, and stability in Colombia since 2015, we will continue to prioritise funding interventions to protect human rights defenders, social leaders and indigenous communities |
Colombia: Ethnic Groups
Asked by: Fabian Hamilton (Labour - Leeds North East) Wednesday 8th June 2022 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what discussions she has had with her Colombian counterpart on the recent attacks against Wayúu Indigenous leaders in La Guajira. Lord Ahmed
Asked by: Lord Lexden (Conservative - Life peer) Wednesday 9th March 2022 Question to the Cabinet Office: To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to bring forward legislation to provide for the rescinding of the peerage held by Lord Ahmed. Answered by Lord True - Shadow Leader of the House of Lords Nazir Ahmed retired from the House of Lords as a result of a complaint before the House of Lords Conduct Committee in 2020, which recommended he be expelled from the House. He is therefore no longer a member of the House of Lords, retains no privileges and may not return. Whilst Peers may voluntarily stop using their titles, there is currently no formal mechanism for revoking their titles, which would require bespoke primary legislation. The Government currently has no plans to bring forward such legislation. The Government is firmly committed to tackling all forms of child sexual abuse, whether it takes place online or in families, institutions or communities, here in this country or overseas. |
