To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they will publish the legal advice sought from First Treasury Counsel in relation to the impact of the Trade Union Bill on the devolved administrations of the UK, in particular in relation to Wales; and whether they will place a copy of that advice in the Library of the House.

As noble Lords would expect, the Government has carefully considered a range of legal issues in relation to the Trade Union Bill. The Government does not disclose the content or the source of its legal advice. It is essential to good government that ministers of the day are able to seek and receive legal advice on a confidential basis. To do otherwise might inhibit governments from seeking legal advice in the future.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what is the volume of trade between the United Kingdom and the European Union, using the latest figures available, and broken down by England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is responsible for the collection of data on goods exported from and imported to the United Kingdom. UK trade data are published by HMRC in the Overseas Trade Statistics and Regional Trade Statistics publications, and via their dedicated website[1].

The volume of trade for each trade flow between the United Kingdom and the European Union by country is reported in the table below.

To ask Her Majesty's Government, in the light of the publication in July of the Annual Statistics on Scientific Procedures on Living Animals Great Britain 2016, how many animals were used by establishments based in Wales, broken down by (1) species, and (2) establishment.

Please find the requested figures in the attached tables.

Table 1 details for 2016, by species, the number of procedures carried out and the number of animals used for the first time in procedures (an animal may be used in more than one procedure, if permitted by licence). The majority of procedures were carried out on mice (86%), followed by fish (9%) and rats (4%).

We do not publish the statistics broken down by establishment, due to data protection reasons. However, we do provide a breakdown by type of establishment. Table 2 details for 2016, by type of establishment, the number of procedures carried out and the number of animals used for the first time in procedures. The majority of procedures were carried out by universities and medical schools (97%).
