Force all meat packaging to use images of slaughterhouses to deglamourise meat - Final Signatures: 11,390

Packets of cigarettes after having adopted grotesque images of the effects of smoking in 2008 have reduced the number of smokers significantly in the UK. I am calling on the government to adopt a similar scheme with meat packaging in order to warn people about what they are eating.

The Government responsed to this petition on 25th January 2019 (View Full Response)
The UK has strict rules on animal welfare at the time of slaughter and food labelling rules to ensure consumers have confidence in the food they eat. Pictures of slaughterhouses are not necessary.

Reform the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 and repeal Breed Specific Legislation. - Final Signatures: 36,665

In light of DEFRA deeming, to EFRA's Inquiry, that the Dangerous Dogs Act (Breed Specific Legislation) is working, by focusing on dogs’ looks; people & dogs are being put at risk. Since the Act, bites have risen & many pets destroyed. We ask the Act be reformed to end the unscientific Breed focus.

The Government responsed to this petition on 3rd August 2018 (View Full Response)
The Government does not consider that removing the prohibition on certain types of dogs would increase public safety or go anyway to reducing the number of dog attacks.

Require supermarkets to offer a plastic-free option for all their fruit & veg. - Final Signatures: 128,001

In response to the problem of an ever-increasing amount of plastic waste polluting our environment, we need to make supermarkets offer an option of no packaging or eco-friendly packaging for each item of fresh fruit and vegetables they sell.

We are working with retailers and the Waste and Resources Action Programme to explore the potential for the introduction of plastic-free initiatives in supermarkets in which fresh food is sold loose.

An independent study to find if driven grouse shooting is of economic benefit. - Final Signatures: 10,781

Driven grouse shooting is a minority sport which seriously compromises other activities and businesses over vast stretches of northern England. We need to determine if it is driving away more jobs and enterprises than it creates, which is likely - no country outside of the UK has it.

The Government responsed to this petition on 14th February 2019 (View Full Response)
The Government has funded independent reports on this issue including the EMBER Report. We recognise there are differing views on shooting but do not believe it is necessary to fund further research.

All halal and kosher certified products are to be prominently labelled as such. - Final Signatures: 12,845

It is strictly forbidden for some Sikhs, Hindus, Buddhists and Christians to consume any halal or kosher certified product or religiously slaughtered meat. Without clear prominent labelling we could be consuming it without knowing. All we are asking for is clear labelling to make an informed choice.

The Government responsed to this petition on 25th February 2019 (View Full Response)
The Government believes that consumers should have the necessary information available to make informed choices about food. The Government is considering this in the context of the UK leaving the EU.

Review the Animal Welfare Regulations 2018 and DEFRA Guidance notes - Final Signatures: 20,004

New regulations for licensed activities involving animals are coming into force on October 1st. Two activities covered are day care for dogs and home boarding for dogs. The new law is contradictory and unclear in many aspects and will force a large number of home businesses to have to close.

The Government responsed to this petition on 12th February 2019 (View Full Response)
We worked with key stakeholders to ensure the licensing requirements are clear and consistent, clarifying and updating the statutory guidance supporting the controls in light of stakeholder concerns.

Amend the 1967 Forestry Act to protect endangered wildlife habitat across the UK - Final Signatures: 11,643

Under the Forestry Act, in Scotland licences to fell woodland can be refused to protect endangered forest wildlife or granted with conditions to safeguard animals. Elsewhere in the UK, authorities cannot consider the impact upon wildlife such as red squirrel or bats when assessing applications.

The Government responsed to this petition on 29th January 2019 (View Full Response)
Landowners must comply with legislation to protect wildlife, including red squirrel. The granting of felling licenses do not change this; they simply authorise the felling of growing trees.

Grant the brown hare protection under S5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. - Final Signatures: 12,398

The brown hare had a Species Action Plan under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan but no action was taken. In parts of the country they are nearly extinct due to farming practices or hunting.

To save this much loved animal becoming yet another species on the verge of extinction. We need to act now!

The Government responsed to this petition on 2nd May 2019 (View Full Response)
The hare population in the UK is stable. As brown hares are already protected by legislation and industry-led initiatives, we do not see a need for additional legal protection.

Scrap The Forestry Commission Licence Agreements With Fox & Hare Hunts - Final Signatures: 29,876

The Forestry Commission licences ‘trail hunts’ (fox, beagle & harrier packs) to use public land with staff convicted under the Hunting Act 2004 & Protection of Badgers Act 1992. These should be scrapped. This shouldn’t apply to licenses agreed with Masters of Bloodhounds & Draghounds Association.

The Government responsed to this petition on 17th October 2018 (View Full Response)
Trail hunting is a legitimate activity. The Forestry Commission only permits trail hunting on its land under strictly controlled agreements.
