The proportion granted varies by nationality reflecting a number of factors, including the evidence submitted in individual applications, whether applicants are eligible, and UKVI’s assessment of whether an applicant is a genuine visitor. Written Question
Asylum
Tuesday 26th January 2016

Asked by: Lord Green of Deddington (Crossbench - Life peer)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government how many asylum applications have been made in each of the last five years by applicants who entered the UK on a student visa; what were the nationalities of each applicant; how many of those applications were refused, and how many unsuccessful applicants were subsequently removed.

Answered by Lord Bates

Over the last five years there have been 15,470 cases of individuals who have entered on a student visa and subsequently also went on to claim asylum. Details by year and nationality are below.

Unfortunately the way corresponding data is held on asylum outcome means that to obtain the numbers of cases that were granted, refused and removed could only be achieved at disproportionate cost.

Written Question
Asylum: Children
Monday 14th September 2015

Asked by: Kirsty Blackman (Scottish National Party - Aberdeen North)

Question to the Home Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many people granted temporary asylum as children have been denied permanent asylum upon applying as an adult by country of origin in each of the last 10 years.

Answered by James Brokenshire

The Home Office does not return Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC) whose claims have been refused, unless adequate reception arrangements are in place in the country to which the child is to be returned. If adequate reception arrangements are absent, most unaccompanied children are granted temporary leave to remain (UASC Leave) which usually continues until their 18th birthday. When a child passes the age of 18 and their UASC Leave expires, they are no longer considered to be an unaccompanied asylum seeking child and are therefore required to take steps to return voluntarily or seek further leave to remain. If the individual does not seek to regularise their stay through further applications or leave is not granted they may be removed should they fail to leave voluntarily. High level representatives of the United Nations and the European Union also attended.

NATO agreed that its partner countries which cooperate with NATO on interoperability should also be invited. As well as countries included above, the Republic of Moldova, Morocco, Serbia, and Switzerland also attended the Summit.
