Written Question
Eating Disorders: Young People
Tuesday 16th March 2021

Asked by: Alexander Stafford (Conservative - Rother Valley)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what recent assessment his Department has made of the adequacy of access to specialist in-patient services for young people with eating disorders in (a) Rotherham and (b) England.

Answered by Nadine Dorries

Specialist children and young people’s mental health in-patient services, including for those with eating disorders, are available for people living in Rotherham from mental health providers within the Yorkshire and Humber region, including Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Riverdale Grange in Sheffield and the recently opened Inspire facility at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust. Additional in-patient beds are due to open in West Yorkshire in December 2021.

We have announced extra funding for eating disorder services in 2021/22 to enable an additional 2,000 children and young people nationally to receive the support they need in the community. We recognise that it is preferable for a young person to stay in the community and at home to receive their support and treatment via the local community team rather than an in-patient admission, wherever possible.

Written Question
Mental Health: Coronavirus
Tuesday 8th December 2020

Asked by: Anne Marie Morris (Conservative - Newton Abbot)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps the Government is taking in response to the Care Quality Commission's most recent Monitoring the Mental Health Act report in the context of covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

Answered by Nadine Dorries

We welcome the Care Quality Commission’s report which gives us an invaluable insight into the ways that mental health inpatient services have responded to the pandemic.

We have announced measures which address some of the concerns raised in the report. This includes a £50 million winter discharge support package which will boost capacity and support good quality discharge from mental health inpatient settings to help reduce pressures on inpatient beds and keep patients safe over the winter.

It is important that any restrictions on hospital visiting are proportionate and only kept in place when absolutely necessary and in line with the Government’s and NHS policies during the pandemic. We are aware that advocacy services have had to innovate during the pandemic in order to continue to offer patients the advice and support that they need.

Notes:

- The data are very limited in terms of what they tell us about mental health bed availability and should therefore be treated with caution for the following reasons:

- The ‘mental illness’ category covers a huge range of inpatient mental health settings which provide very different services for people with different needs. As such, it does not provide the granularity of information required to identify where there might be particular pressures in the mental health system.

- They only cover beds in services that are consultant-led.

- It is very difficult to assess the accuracy of the aggregate data submitted and the accompanying guidance has not been updated since the Department published it in 2010.
