To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made, if any, of the UN Committee Against Torture’s concluding observations on Bahrain, issued on 28 November 2024 (CAT/C/BHR/CO/4), and in particular of the Committee’s call for the release of human rights defenders allegedly detained and imprisoned in retaliation for their work, including Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, Abduljalil al-Singace and Hassan Mushaima.

The FCDO continues to follow matters that relate to human rights within Bahrain closely, including some individual cases. The Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, discussed human rights with Bahrain Foreign Minister Al Zayani on 22 April. The UK remains committed to supporting reforms in Bahrain and to encouraging the government to meet its human rights commitments.

The FCDO continues to follow the case of Hasan Mushaima and discuss with the Government of Bahrain and oversight bodies. The Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, discussed Mushaima's case with Foreign Minister Al Zayani on 3 July 2023. We also encourage those with specific concerns to raise them directly with the appropriate Bahraini oversight body.

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the joint letter sent to the King of Bahrain by 15 non-governmental organisations on 11 December concerning the declining health of imprisoned opposition leader Hassan Mushaima; and what representations they have made to the government of Bahrain to (1) secure his release (2) ensure he receives adequate medical care, and (3) secure him access to his medical records.

Recently the Minister of State for the Middle East, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, discussed a range of human rights issues and some individual cases during his visit to Bahrain on Sunday 12 February. We also encourage those with issues to raise them directly with the appropriate Bahraini independent oversight body.
