Southern Africa: Visits Abroad
Asked by: Adam Jogee (Labour - Newcastle-under-Lyme) Monday 9th September 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what plans he has to visit (a) Zimbabwe and (b) the Southern African Development Community region. Answered by Anneliese Dodds - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) The Foreign Secretary looks forward to visiting the South African Development Community (SADC) region moving forward and engaging with all member countries, including Zimbabwe, on a range of bilateral issues. The Minister for Africa has already visited both Angola and DRC within the first month of his role, highlighting the importance of the SADC region to the UK. I have visited South Sudan & Ethiopia, where I also met with the African Union Commissioner Bankole to discuss our shared priorities and express the UK's desire for a renewed, genuine partnership with the AU. Since the Foreign Secretary's appointment, he has written to his Zimbabwean counterpart to reaffirm his commitment to working with the country in order to boost trade and investment, enhance strong people to people links and to tackle the climate crisis. As President Mnangagwa begins his role as Chairperson of SADC, the UK will continue to engage with Zimbabwe on areas of mutual importance, both through Ministers and the Embassy in Harare. |
Zimbabwe: Economic Cooperation
Asked by: Adam Jogee (Labour - Newcastle-under-Lyme) Friday 26th July 2024 Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office: To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, what plans he has to promote economic cooperation between the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. Answered by Anneliese Dodds - Minister of State (Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office) The Foreign Secretary is putting growth at the heart of our foreign policy making, including improving relationships with the fastest growing markets of the future across the Global South. Trade between Zimbabwe and the UK was worth £633 million in 2023 and increasing economic growth between the UK and Zimbabwe is a top priority for our Embassy in Harare. We are pursuing this through a range of channels, including by supporting UK businesses to enter and navigate the Zimbabwean market and engaging with firms interested in the mining, horticulture, renewable energy and wider sustainability sectors. On 10 July, the UK's development finance institution, British International Investment, signed an agreement to invest $10 million in a Zimbabwean bank, for lending to the agriculture sector. |
