Semiconductors: Trade Promotion
Asked by: Saqib Bhatti (Conservative - Meriden and Solihull East)
Thursday 12th September 2024

Question to the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology:

To ask the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, whether he plans to lead a semiconductor business delegation abroad.

Answered by Feryal Clark - Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Department for Science, Innovation and Technology)

Given the global nature of semiconductor supply chains, creating opportunities for businesses to establish international relationships is crucial for the UK’s growth. The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology works to make these connections. The National Technology Advisor, Dr Dave Smith, recently led the UK delegation to SEMICON Taiwan. This included representation from a Department for Business and Trade Mission and an Innovate UK Global Business Innovation Programme – both featuring UK semiconductor businesses. The Department will also work with the Department for Business and Trade ahead of the upcoming trade mission to India in November.

The Department for Business and Trade intends to cover the UK’s accession to the CPTPP Agreement in a Free Trade Agreement monitoring report. The Department will consider a range of areas for inclusion in this report, including the environment, and it will take account of stakeholder views. The Department for Business and Trade has a dedicated investment function in the UK and overseas, including the Office for Investment.

The Government is taking forward the reforms necessary to ensure foreign investors have the support needed to invest. This includes setting up new institutions such as Great British Energy, which will combine the power of the private sector and government to accelerate the UK’s clean energy transition, and the National Wealth Fund which will mobilise billions more in private investment in the UK’s green and growth sectors.

The Chancellor will set out more detail on the National Wealth Fund ahead of the International Investment Summit in October.
