Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what plans they have to respect the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea, defining territorial waters extending to at most 12 nautical miles from the baseline of a coastal state, post-Brexit.

Under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the UK’s territorial sea extends to 12 nautical miles from its baselines and its Exclusive Economic Zone extends to 200 nautical miles or the median line from its base lines. On leaving the EU the UK will become an independent coastal state with the right to control access to and management of fisheries within its Exclusive Economic Zone. UNCLOS also contains obligations to work with neighbours on the sustainable management of shared stocks and the UK government has always been clear it intends to do just that.
