(asked on 25th June 2018) - View Source

Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what will be the status of the protected geographical designation of origin for UK food products when the UK leaves the EU.

This question was answered on 2nd July 2018

The Government recognises the economic and cultural importance of our Geographical Indications (GIs) and is working to ensure that they continue to be protected in the future.

Using powers under the EU (Withdrawal) Bill, we will create UK GI schemes for wines, aromatised wines, spirits and agricultural products and foodstuffs. This will provide UK protection for UK GIs when we leave the EU and ensure that the UK fulfils its obligations under the World Trade Organisation’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.

Negotiations on GIs with the EU are continuing and our aim is that all current UK GIs will continue to be protected by the EU’s GI schemes once we have left the EU.
