Question to the Department for Business and Trade:

To ask His Majesty's Government, further to the Written Answer by Baroness Jones of Whitchurch on 11 March (HL5240), what is the turnover and gross value added for each of the 73 industries covered in their definition of energy-intensive industry.

  • Data from the latest ONS Annual Business Survey on energy intensive industries (EIIs) for turnover and GVA in 2022 was published in 2024 and can be seen in full as an attachment.
  • In 2022, the EIIs with the highest turnover were manufacture of refined petroleum products (£56.2 billion), manufacture of basic iron and steel and of ferro-alloys (£9.2 billion), and manufacture of prepared feeds for farm animals (£8.0 billion).
  • EIIs with the highest GVA in 2022 were manufacture of refined petroleum products (£5.4 billion), manufacture of other plastic products (£2.7 billion), and manufacture of plastic plates, sheets, tubes and profiles (£2.3 billion).
