Question to the Home Office:
To ask His Majesty's Government what plans they have to ask the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to review the classification of cannabis in light of new evidence on the effects of the drug on mental and physical health which has come to light since the Council last made their recommendations in 2008.
Cannabis is controlled as a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
Ministers have a statutory obligation to receive and consider advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (‘ACMD’) before seeking to make changes to the classification of drugs through secondary legislation.
The Government has no current plans to commission the ACMD to re-assess the classification of cannabis under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
