A multi-academy trust (MAT) is an independent charitable company that is set up to run more than one academy. A MAT may be set up with one academy initially, with the intention of identifying other schools to join the trust later. An “academy” is a school or educational institution established under academy arrangements, as per the Academies Act 2010.
