Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask Her Majesty's Government how much money has been invested in UK mental health research over the past five years and how much of this has come each year from the EU.

The most recent analysis by the UK Clinical Research Collaboration shows that the overall annual spend by major public and charitable United Kingdom funders related to mental health was £122.3 million in 2014. These analyses are not conducted annually.

The majority of public and charity mental health research funding in the UK (82.6% in 2014) comes from three major funders: the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust. The remainder is provided by other research councils, Government bodies and the charity sector.

The annual spend on mental health research by the NIHR for the last five years is shown in the following table.
