Asylum seekers who have had their initial decision outstanding for 12 months or more, through no fault of their own, can apply for permission to work. However, asylum seekers can volunteer whilst their claim is considered without being granted permission to work. The UK does not have National Service and asylum seekers are not eligible to apply to join the UK Armed Forces.
