The Department for Education does not hold information centrally on the nationality of teachers in the English school workforce. However, the department does hold information on the nationality of entrants to postgraduate teacher training since 2019/20.

In the 2021/22 training year, there were 30,323 postgraduate new entrants to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) whose nationality was known (97% of all postgraduate new entrants). Of these, 93% (28,296) were UK nationals, 4% (1,271) were European Economic Area (EEA) nationals, and the remaining 2% (756) were nationals of other countries. These proportions are broadly in line with data in the 2020/21 and 2019/20 training years, with a slight decrease in the proportion of EEA nationals, down from 5% in 2019/20 and 2020/21, to 4% in 2021/22.
