Question to the Department for Business and Trade:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what steps his Department is taking to support businesses reliant on imported steel.

Based on 2025 data, three-quarters of UK steel imports by value (74%) and over half by volume (53%) are outside scope of steel trade measure.

Following extensive engagement with UK industry, the final quota volume increased by 21% compared to our provisional and previously published details. These quotas allow continued availability of tariff-free goods in the UK.

To ease potential short-term impacts, a transitional arrangement is available under which the new measure would not apply to goods agreed under contract before 14 March 2026 and imported between 1 July and 30 September 2026. We have also removed country caps and allowed rollover between quarters within the same quota year.

The measure will be reviewed after 12 months to ensure it remains effective.
