Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what his policy is on the use of compounds with pharmacological effects at any stage of the procedures licenced under the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Mitochondrial Donation) Regulations 2015.

This question was answered on 28th February 2017

The provision of mitochondrial donation treatments will be regulated by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), in accordance with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Mitochondrial Donation) Regulations 2015, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 and the HFEA’s Code of Practice guidance. The culture media in which embryos are grown is regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). The HFEA and MHRA will ensure that the media used in mitochondrial donation is appropriate for use in this treatment.
