Breast Cancer: Screening

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:
To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, which body is responsible for overseeing national provision of extra breast screening for women with family history of breast cancer, as recommended by NICE guideline CG164.
No single body has sole responsibility for overseeing the national provision of high-risk breast screening. Provision of high-risk breast cancer screening services is currently the responsibility of National Health Service trusts, at a local level.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has produced guidance on caring for people with a family history of breast, ovarian or other related (prostate or pancreatic) cancer. In addition, the NHS Breast Screening Programme has published protocols for providers on the surveillance of women at a higher risk of developing breast cancer. As part of a wider screening improvement programme and following publication of the vision for screening as set out in ‘Advancing our Health: Prevention in the 2020s’, the department, NHS England and Public Health England are considering how to better integrate targeted screening in high-risk groups with our current approach to population screening.
