DFID has prioritised a range of programmes which seek to improve energy access in developing countries, many of which have large numbers of poor people with limited or no access to electricity. All of these programmes support delivery of Global Goal 7, to achieve universal access to affordable and modern energy for all by 2030.

For example, programmes in Kenya and Tanzania aim to stimulate investment in community scale, renewable energy “mini-grids”, increasing electricity access for millions of people. Power generation makes up 21% of CDC investments, which will deliver 56,000 Gigawatt hours of electricity for homes and businesses in the poorest economies in Africa and Asia.
