The UK and the EU agreed in the May 2025 Common Understanding to protect the public and increase the safety and security of UK and EU citizens through a range of commitments on law enforcement and judicial cooperation, including in relation to drug risks and threats and border security. This is in addition to existing exchanges of law enforcement and criminal justice data with EU Member States through the Trade and Cooperation Agreement. None of these existing arrangements provide for oversight of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and there have been no discussions on CJEU jurisdiction with respect to our work to enhance cooperation in these areas.
