Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, pursuant to the answer of 2 September 2026 to Question 19365 on Local Government: Reorganisation, for what reason the Electoral Commission was not consulted on the cancellation of council elections announced on 18 December 2025.
This question was answered on 2nd November 2026
The Government wrote to the Commission on 18 December 2025 and considered its representations ahead of decisions about the potential postponement of local elections in 2026. However, there was no requirement to consult the Electoral Commission.
