Stem Cells: Donors

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health, what information his Department holds on (i) the number of people who were registered as stem cell donors with (a) NHS Blood and Transplant, (b) the Welsh Bone Marrow Registry and (c) The Anthony Nolan registry in each year since 2003-04 and (ii) the number of such people who were from black and ethnic minority ethnic backgrounds.

The British Bone Marrow Registry (BBMR) and Anthony Nolan registries were merged in 2012 to form the Anthony Nolan and NHS Stem Cell Registry. In 2013 the registry was expanded to include the Welsh Bone Marrow Registry. The Anthony Nolan and NHS Stem Cell Registry publish annual reports which provide a breakdown of registered donors by ethnicity. The Department only holds data prior to the creation of the Anthony Nolan and NHS Stem Cell Registry for the BBMR. The numbers of donors of Black, Asian or Minority Ethic (BAME) genetic heritage are listed below:
