The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has always been focussed on low carbon heating. The government is reforming the RHI to ensure it focusses better on long-term decarbonisation – through technologies such as biomethane and heat pumps - and offers better value for money. These reforms were set out in December 2016 in the response to the consultation ‘The Renewable Heat Incentive: A Reformed and Refocused scheme’. The first stage of the reforms were enacted in September 2017 and further regulations are currently in Parliament.
