The Department does not hold information on those schools in each local authority (LA) area, in England, that have been found to have asbestos that is yet to be treated. Responsibility for managing asbestos in schools rests with the duty holder – in most cases, the LA or academy trust.

The Department is fully committed to supporting schools, LAs and academy trusts to fulfil their duty to manage asbestos safely. In February 2017, the Department published a report of a voluntary survey of asbestos management in schools which is available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/asbestos-management-in-schools--2. The Department is developing plans to seek written assurance from all duty holders that their schools are compliant with existing legislation and guidance on the management of asbestos in schools.
