PCCs may appoint a deputy should they wish, and the decision of who to appoint as a deputy is a matter for the publicly accountable PCC. PCCs appoint their deputies in an open and transparent way. This includes a public confirmation hearing by the relevant Police and Crime Panel, who must review the proposed appointment and make a recommendation on whether the candidate should be appointed.

Under paragraph 1(a) and (c) of Schedule 1 of the Elected Local Policing Bodies (Specified Information) Order 2011, PCCs are obliged to publish the name and salary of each relevant office holder, which includes any deputy PCC.
