The Autism Act was made and given Royal Assent on 12 November 2009.

The Act places three key duties on the Secretary of State for Health:

- To produce a strategy for meeting the needs of adults in England with autistic spectrum conditions (the Strategy), and to keep the Strategy under review;

- To produce Statutory Guidance for local councils and local health bodies on implementing the Strategy which they have a duty to act in accordance with; and

- To keep the Statutory Guidance under review, considering, in particular, the extent to which the guidance has been effective in securing the implementation of the strategy.
