I am sure that the hon. Member welcomed the Chancellor’s announcements on business rates last week, which included introducing a two-year real-terms freeze for all retail, hospitality and leisure properties to help with increased inflation. We are also removing 70,000 extra properties from business rates, meaning that half of all RHL properties will pay no business rates at all. High streets are the beating heart of our communities and are so important for local people and jobs. We are committed to tackling their decline with our high streets strategy and so many other initiatives in partnership with the sector. We want to back our high streets, back the jobs and back the businesses that support them.

On behalf of the staff who work at the Poundland stores in Cannock town centre and the Linkway retail park, I find this news particularly shocking, particularly given that the company recently announced a return to like-for-like sales growth and thanked staff for their “amazing efforts”. Does the Minister agree that, in the light of efforts to rescue Poundland being rebuffed, Gordon Brothers needs to get around the table with USDAW, managers and creditors to save this iconic staple of our high streets?

I agree with my hon. Friend about the importance of jobs and the uncertainty that lots of the employees are working through with the union. I pay tribute to them for all their work. We are committed to engaging with all stakeholders as much as we can, and we are making our priorities clear. We want the company to do everything it can to protect employees and suppliers. We are seeking clarity on its plans and a clear understanding of the situation.
