Written Question
Civil Servants: Yorkshire and the Humber
Wednesday 10th September 2014

Asked by: Hugh Bayley (Labour - York Central)

Question to the Cabinet Office:

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, how many full-time equivalent jobs with the Civil Service or government agencies there were in Yorkshire in May 2010; and how many such jobs there are now.

Answered by Lord Maude of Horsham

On 31 March 2010, there were 38,000 full time equivalent Civil Servants employed in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The latest available statistics for 2013 show that this number reduced to 31,590 as at 31 March 2013.

To help deal with the deficit which this Government inherited in 2010, the Government has reduced the size of the Civil Service by 17% since the 2010 General Election. It is now at its smallest since the Second World War, representing a significant increase in efficiency and productivity. This reduction helped save taxpayers £2.4bn last year alone, against a 2009/10 baseline.

Tuesday 2nd September 2014

Asked by: Hugh Bayley (Labour - York Central)

Question to the Cabinet Office:

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, pursuant to the oral Answer from the right hon. Member for Banbury, representing the Church Commissioners, to the hon. Member for York Central of 17 July 2014, what the details are of the joint visits made by Government Ministers and the Church to examine the role of food banks; what the Government's policies are to reduce the number of people living in poverty and dependent on food banks; and if he will make a statement.

Answered by Brooks Newmark

Discussion on the use of food banks involves various Government departments. I lead on Government’s engagement with civil society organisations. There has been an extremely impressive response by civil society and faith groups to support vulnerable people. Following the Rt. Hon Member for Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner’s meeting with a regional group of Church leaders to listen to and discuss the Church’s views on food banks, I will be meeting with three more such groups in the near future.
