Written Question
Aviation: Alternative Fuels
Tuesday 2nd June 2026

Asked by: Henry Tufnell (Labour - Mid and South Pembrokeshire)

Question to the Department for Transport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether she has considered the potential merits of reviewing the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Mandate to ensure it supports the competitiveness of the SAF industry.

Answered by Keir Mather - Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Transport)

The SAF Mandate has been designed to drive decarbonisation at an acceptable cost.

There are, however, inherent uncertainties given the nascency of the SAF industry. We intend to publish an update on SAF before the Summer recess on a range of topics, subject to usual cross-Government approvals. This will include a Call for Evidence on whether additional flexibility is needed in the SAF Mandate to account for uncertainties in global production capacity without undermining investor confidence.
