PETA, an organisation that is meant to be dedicated to protecting animals, has proposed to the UK government that it should add Staffordshire Bull Terriers to the dangerous dogs act, effectively banning them outright. Breed Specific Legislation is not the solution to the problem of dog attacks.

Ban Greyhound Racing - Final Signatures: 19,829

GBGB figures show 1,003 dogs were killed and 4,837 were injured as a direct result of greyhound racing in 2017 alone. These figures could be grossly underestimated because the GBGB are not independently audited. Dogs can be legally killed on economic grounds and not necessarily by a vet.

The Government responsed to this petition on 25th October 2018 (View Full Response)
The Government has no plans to ban greyhound racing. While DEFRA is aware of concerns about racing and retired greyhounds we believe these problems can be addressed by means other than a ban.

NEW LAW THAT CATS KILLED/INJURED BY A VEHICLE ARE CHECKED FOR A CHIP: ROUND 3 - Final Signatures: 107,062

Thousands of cats are just disposed of every year without being scanned for a chip after being involved in RTAs. Owners search for months and years and never get closure. Scanning takes two minutes. Cats are a part of a family and deserve to be returned home, not thrown into landfill.

Debate: This petition was debated in Westminster Hall on 17th June 2019

The Government responsed to this petition on 15th February 2019 (View Full Response)
We encourage microchipping of cats and it is established good practice for local authorities and the Highways Agency to scan domestic pets found on our streets so that the owner can be informed.

Ban peat compost. - Final Signatures: 12,928

Peat is vital in the fight against climate breakdown as it stores vast amounts of carbon. It also provides habitat for a diverse range of wildlife. Therefore we should not be using peat compost to improve the soil in our gardens. Other organic matter is available and is effective for growers.

The Government responsed to this petition on 30th March 2020 (View Full Response)
The Government is committed to ending peat use in horticulture by 2030.

Ban super trawlers from fishing in UK waters. - Final Signatures: 25,614

Margiris, the second largest trawler in the world, was spotted off the coast of the Isle of Wight at the end of September.

The UK Government should work internationally to ban these trawlers and remove them from UK waters.

The Government responsed to this petition on 8th September 2020 (View Full Response)
The Government has no immediate plans to ban super trawlers from UK waters. Leaving the CFP enables us to control access and make rules in UK waters to help develop a sustainable fisheries policy.

Reclassify the theft of a pet to a specific crime in its own right. - Final Signatures: 107,352

Review the sentencing guidelines for theft offences, so that where the theft of a family pet is involved, monetary value is irrelevant for the categorisation of the crime for sentencing purposes.

Ensure Police Forces are given appropriate guidance and training to record and investigate cases.

Debate: This petition was debated in Westminster Hall on 2nd July 2018

The Government responsed to this petition on 27th February 2018 (View Full Response)
We understand the distress caused by the theft of a much loved family pet and laws are in place to deal firmly with offenders who commit such crimes.

Update the rehoming strategy for dogs and cats in UK laboratories - Final Signatures: 6

All Laboratories involving dogs/cats should be required to have a rehoming strategy as a condition of being issued a licence and for the Government to fund a care/home system for laboratory animals. They should make public their adoption policies for rehoming and publish rehoming figures annually.

Ban the use of nylon gill nets for fish capture in UK waters. - Final Signatures: 8

Inshore fish species such as bass, mullet and salmonids are being netted in the UK everyday. Much of this netting is carried out illegally in fish nursery areas, estuaries, and sensitive habitats. Gill nets also pose a risk to wildlife and wild swimmers becoming entangled. This practice must stop.
