Food: Japan
Asked by: Emily Thornberry (Labour - Islington South and Finsbury) Friday 19th April 2024 Question to the Department for Business and Trade: To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, with reference to his Department's press release of 27 February 2024 entitled UK businesses welcome protection for iconic British food and drink in Japan, what the outcome was of the application by the Japanese authorities to award geographical indication status in the UK to Iwate Mokutan/Iwate Kirizumi, as published for consultation by the Department for International Trade on 21 December 2021. Answered by Greg Hands - Minister of State (Department for Business and Trade) Kikuchi Suiden Gobo was added onto the UK GI register as a protected product on 8 March 2024. The department has amended the press release of 27 February 2024 to include Kikuchi Suiden Gobo. The updated press release can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-businesses-welcome-protection-for-iconic-british-food-and-drink-in-japan. The entry for Yatsushiro Tokusan Banpeiyu was delayed but has now been completed and is listed alongside the other 37 first tranche products from Japan. The UK was unable to register Iwate Mokutan as a GI because there is no classification under current UK domestic legislation which could include charcoal. The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs wrote to the Japanese authorities in 2022 to explain this decision, which they accepted. |

Department for Business and Trade: Fraud and Maladministration
Asked by: Pat McFadden (Labour - Wolverhampton South East) Monday 11th March 2024 Question to the Department for Business and Trade: To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what estimate she has made of the amount of money lost to fraud and error by her Department in each of the last three financial years. Answered by Nusrat Ghani - Minister of State (Minister for Europe) The Government is proud of its record in proactively seeking to find and prevent more fraud in the system. We have established the dedicated Public Sector Fraud Authority (PSFA). In its first year it delivered £311 million in audited counter fraud benefits. The PSFA produces a Fraud Landscape Report. This provides data on fraud and error detection, loss and recoveries in central government, outside of the tax and welfare system. The 2020/21 Report was published in March 2023. Due to the recent Machinery of Government changes, the Department for Business and Trade have not yet published any fraud and error estimates. The latest published figures available for the Department for International Trade are available in the 2022 Cross-Government Fraud Landscape Annual Report. The latest Government figures made available in the BEIS Annual Report and Accounts (2022/2023), for all BEIS activities, indicated that estimated expected losses due to fraud and error within the Bounce Back Loan Scheme will be £1.74bn. There are not material levels of fraud and error within the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme or the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme. Other losses include £4 million in relation to 2 suspected fraudulent payments within the Future Fund Scheme. |

Department for Business and Trade: Advertising
Asked by: Pat McFadden (Labour - Wolverhampton South East) Wednesday 6th March 2024 Question to the Department for Business and Trade: To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, how much funding her Department and its predecessor Department (a) budgeted for and (b) spent on advertising in each of the last three financial years. Answered by Nusrat Ghani - Minister of State (Minister for Europe) The Department buys advertising media through its media buying agency Omnicom Media Group UK Ltd. Advertising is used to promote investment and UK exports.
The Department’s general ledger records spend with Omnicom Media Group for the last three years for which figures are available as follows:
2020/21: £15,102,407.21 2021/22: £11,890,853.20 2022/23: £13,124,598.26
Advertising is part of the Department’s wider marketing strategy. Budgeting is carried out at the marketing category level, so no records are held on sums specifically budgeted for advertising.

Department for Business and Trade: Apprentices
Asked by: Seema Malhotra (Labour (Co-op) - Feltham and Heston) Wednesday 6th March 2024 Question to the Department for Business and Trade: To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, how much her Department (a) paid in apprenticeship levy fees and (b) spent from its apprenticeship levy funds between September 2021 and August 2023. Answered by Nusrat Ghani - Minister of State (Minister for Europe) Following a machinery of government in February 2023, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy and the Department for International trade were replaced by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and the Department for Business and Trade. As the Department for Business and Trade did not exist between September 2021 and January 2023, we are unable to provide data on payment towards the apprenticeship levy and spend of levy funds for this period. Since the creation of the Department for Business and Trade the apprenticeship levy account has remained shared between the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, and the Department for Business and Trade. Therefore, the Department for Business and Trade is unable to accurately provide the amount paid in apprenticeship levy fees between February 2023 and August 2023 and is unable to accurately provide the amount spent from the levy over the same period. |

However, as has been the case under successive administrations, the Government does not publish granular detail on Ministers’ travel at home or abroad, nor details of those accompanying them. |

Asked by: Mundell, Oliver (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party - Dumfriesshire) Wednesday 26th April 2023 Question To ask the Scottish Government what representations it has made to the UK Department for International Trade regarding the interests of Scotland's agricultural sector in future trade negotiations. Answered by Gougeon, Mairi - Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Land Reform and Islands The Scottish Government has repeatedly made the case, to all relevant departments of the UK Government (in correspondence and in a range of established forums) for a guaranteed role in all stages of the negotiation and implementation of UK Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to protect and promote Scottish agricultural priorities. This is because, while the negotiation of FTAs is reserved to the UK Government, trade deals cover many devolved issues which have significant implications for Scottish agri-food producers and for our economy. The Scottish Government had previously not been given full sight of relevant FTA chapter texts or supporting data from the Department of Business and Trade in the negotiation of the recent agreements such as UK-Australia and New Zealand deals. Through a recent information sharing agreement with the Devolved Administrations, the UK Government has now accepted the benefits of sharing greater information on trade negotiations, such as the agri-food elements of the agreement in principle on CPTPP accession. We welcome this progress, and the Scottish Government will continue to work regularly and collaboratively with the UK Government in the interests of the Scottish agri-food sector, including by seeking further assurances from the UK Government about the agri-food elements of the UK-CPTPP agreement at the recent 17 April meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Group on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. |
