Question to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government whether they plan to review the effectiveness of the Pet Animals Act 1951 in view of the increase in the sale of pets online.

This question was answered on 8th July 2015

Anyone in the business of selling pets whether in a traditional pet shop or on-line is subject to the provisions of the Pet Animals Act 1951. The definition of keeping a pet shop in the 1951 Act is broad enough to bring on-line sales within the scope of the Act; therefore no changes are needed.
