The Government was shocked by the recent horrific attacks on 13 May against churches and the police in Surabaya. UK ministers expressed our condemnation and sympathy for the victims and their families. The Indonesian government is committed to protecting places of worship and has committed itself to promoting pluralism and tolerance, but rhetoric and attacks against minority communities have increased around religion in the last year. The UK and Indonesian governments and law enforcement agencies co-operate to tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
