Across the country local authorities have done exceptional work to prepare their communities for COVID-19 outbreaks, protecting the most vulnerable and saving lives.

As of 1 July, all 152 upper tier local authorities have created and shared their outbreak plans. Their plans focus on identifying and containing potential outbreaks in places such as workplaces, ensuring testing capacity is deployed effectively and helping the most vulnerable in self isolation.

Councils were given £300 million in new dedicated funding to support this and have published further guidance on containing local outbreaks. The package recognises the additional costs and pressures on finances councils are facing as a result of the current crisis.

The Government will continue to work closely with councils as the pandemic progresses.
