Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the statement by the spokespersons of the Foreign Ministries of France, Germany, Italy and Spain on 19 January, which urged the Israeli authorities to reverse the decision to build hundreds of new housing units in East Jerusalem, on the basis that such construction would “further disconnect the West Bank from East Jerusalem and constitute an additional obstacle to the two-state solution”.

I refer the noble Lord to my [Lord Ahmad] reply to their question HL5391 on 27 January. The UK's position on settlements is clear. They are illegal under international law. The former Minister for the Middle East, North Africa and North America, James Cleverly, raised UK opposition to settlement expansion with the Government of Israel on 9 November.
