The department does not collect data on school swimming pools. Swimming is a vital life skill which is why pupils are taught to swim and about water safety at primary school. Swimming and water safety are compulsory elements of the Physical Education curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2. Schools often make use of community swimming pools to deliver on these requirements.

The department is working closely with officials from across government to review and respond to recommendations on school swimming from the independent Swim Group. The Swim Group was established in 2015 and brings together representatives from across the swimming sector.
