Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what information they have about the well-being of former president of the Maldives Mohamed Nasheed, opposition leaders, activists, and other political prisoners who have been arrested or jailed; and what representations they and the Commonwealth have made to the government of the Maldives on behalf of those individuals.

We have received many reports about the well-being of former President Nasheed and others, and about the conditions in which they are held. The Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for East Devon (Mr Swire), has regularly raised these issues, and our wider concerns, with the Government of the Maldives, most recently with Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon on 28 May and 12 June. We also regularly raise the issue of the Maldives with the Commonwealth Secretary General, most recently on 16 June. Commonwealth delegates have recently visited the Maldives to investigate the circumstances of former President Nasheed’s imprisonment.
