The Malaysian government is fully aware of our position on capital punishment and we continue to raise this issue at the highest levels.

We warmly welcome the Malaysian Cabinet’s announcement in October 2018 to abolish the death penalty. We hope the necessary legislation is introduced in the Malaysian Parliament as soon as possible.

The Foreign Secretary discussed our support for human rights reforms in Malaysia, including on the death penalty with his counterpart, Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah, during his visit to Kuala Lumpur 3-4 January.

The Minister for Asia and the Pacific encouraged early progress on the abolition of the death penalty with the Malaysian authorities during his visit to Malaysia in October 2018.

Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur continues to raise this issue in their discussions with the Malaysian government.
