The Government has not given consideration to reducing the use of folic acid supplementation by women of child-bearing age.

To reduce the risk of neural tube defect affected pregnancies, all women who could become pregnant are advised to take an additional 400μg/day folic acid as a medicinal or food supplement prior to conception and until the twelfth week of pregnancy.
