Our ambition is for every child, no matter what challenges they face, to have access to a world-class education that sets them up for life. We want all children and young people, no matter what their special educational need or disability (SEND), to be able to reach their full potential and receive the right support to succeed in their education and as they move into adult life.

In line with the SEND Code of Practice, where a pupil is identified as having a SEND, schools should take action to remove barriers to learning and put effective special educational provision in place. A four-part cycle ‘graduated approach’ should begin. Through the graduated approach earlier decisions and actions are revisited, refined and revised with a growing understanding of the pupil’s needs and of what supports the pupil is making good progress and securing good outcomes. It draws on more detailed approaches, more frequent review and more specialist expertise in successive cycles in order to match interventions to the SEND of children and young people.
