The hon. Member will know that the UK and the Falkland Islands have very strong political and economic ties.

On the former, the Islanders expressed their clear desire to remain a British Overseas Territory, voting overwhelmingly to do so in a referendum in 2013. This Government will always defend the right of the Falkland Islanders to determine their own political future, as we also support the Falkland Islands Government’s right to develop the Islands’ economy.

As Minister for the Falklands, I worked with my noble Friend, Lord Livingston of Parkhead, the former Minister for Trade and Investment to extend UK Trade & Investment support to businesses from the Islands.
