If a dual British national is detained in the country of their other nationality, we would not normally offer support or get involved in dealings between the British national and the authorities of that state. We may make an exception to this rule if, having reviewed the circumstances of the case, we consider that the British national is vulnerable and we have humanitarian concerns. However, the help we can provide will depend on the specific circumstances of the detention and the country of the British National's other nationality agreeing to it.

If a dual British national is detained in a third country we offer the same support as we would for mono-British nationals. They do not need to be travelling on a British passport.
